A the pursuit of obtaining the American Dream,

A major theme in The Great Gatsby is the pursuit of obtaining the American Dream, It seems that througout the novel the characters must reach this goal. In The novel The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgeral he explains to us thethe American Dream. He shoes Gatsby’s qualities of being a hard worker. In the novel The American dream is defined as someone starting from the bottom, and work hard to being a rich wealty person, and will eventually have alot of money, a nice luxirious car, a big house or mansion, nice clothes and a happy family symbolizes the American dream. The American dream represents  the people, no matter who he or she is, can become successful in life by his or her own hard work, and anything can be acomplished if they put their mind into it, but it has also caused many problems in the characters. The various characters represent hope about the American dream, which implies that America is not a meritocracy. In the story Myrtle really wanted the American dream so she decides to have an affair with Tom Buchanan. Her doing this ruins the relationship between her and george. Myrtle wants that good wealthy type of life style.  Myrtle enjoys reading rich, trendy peoples lifestyle magazines, which this shows her spirit for the American Dream being rich maybe even famous. This is one reason why she wants to have a life with Tom, she wants to live like this. In the novel when Myrtle decided to marry George Wilson she though she made a good decision and would not regret and would live happily ever after. “The only crazy I was was when I married him. I knew right away I had made an error, George had borrowed somebody’s suit to get married in, and never told me about it, and the man came to pick it up after., when he was out”.(37) This quote demonstrates how Myrtle did not like that her husband George could not afford his own suit to get married, But she does look at Tom a much different way. She sees him as a respected person who can afford anything for any ocasion. Myrtle is  not only addicted to his good appearance but also his money. Myrtle thinks that Tom is the perfect man for her and represent the American Dream. In the novel Myrtle is described as being in the lower class, because she doesnt have money. Eventually Daisy finds out and her relationship with Tom is ruined and over. Daisy lost all her love she had for Tom, and realized she married the wrong man. Her life was changed and impacted. She also find out a secret that Tom is hiding from her.”She might have the decency not to telephone him a dinner time. Don’t you think?” (20) This quote shoes us that during this time it was dinner, and Tom receives a call from a women and, Jordan claims its a lover. This shows us that Daisy’s and Toms relationship is not so good. Tom does not treat her well and seem like he does not care about her as much. Later it was discovered that it was Daissy who killed Myrtle, because she was the one having an affair with her husband. This is why The American Dream and being a wealthy person is important throughout the novel. This also all leads to problems. The need for a good wealthy life and having the American Dream only caused destruction, pain in this novel and destroyed someones life. In the novel its seen that if you have the American Dream you will have a good life and no problems. For example Daisy believes she has everything she ever wanted being a wealthy women, happiness and love, this all equals to the american Dream. Daisy later finds out she has nothing and lost her american dream. She has a child and it seems like she does not care about him at all. Also her child was not around as much as its supposed to because it needs to be taken care of. Daisy says  “I’m glad it’s a girl, And I hope she’ll be a fool  that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful fool.”(22) This quote shoes us that she probably wanted to have a baby boy instead of a girl, because the baby needs to be a cute “beautiful fool” how she says in order to be succesful. During that time women only married for money and not much love. Daisy realized she had love for Tom, but after it was all because of the money. Daisy realized she only wanted him because of his money. When Daisy is with Gatsby something made her sad and broke  her heart. This is when she had not seen Gatsby in 5 years and starts to cry. “They’re such beautiful shirts, it makes me sad because I’ve never seen such – such beautiful shirts before.”(89) This quote shows us that in the end all Daisy married for was money and not for love. But  Daisy thinks that she would have true love with Gatsby if she married him. The hope for the American Dream and the perfect man to have a life with ended Daisys happiness. Throghout the novel it seem like the more someone hangs out with wealthy people like at Gatsbys mansion the more they want to go for that American Dream and live the good life. Gatsby feels like he has to live the American Dream to accomplish what his goal which is Daisy. Gatsby think by having alot of money he wants to be able to give anything Daisy ever wanted and get back with her. The green light throughout the novel tell us that its Gatsby hope for having Daisy with him. No matter how tough Gatsby lives his life, he will never be able to achieve it. This makes Gastby follow the American Dream. It is shown that Gatsby sees the green light as hope and money. Gatsby follows the American Dream because it postures a picture of a perfect man. He cares how people see him ass and his appearance to others. He tries to be the perfect man for daisy. “We both looked down at the grass – there was a sharp line where my ragged lawn ended and the darker, well-kept expanse of his began. I suspected he meant my grass.” (80) This quote shows is the importance of reality and appearance and how Gatsby want everything to look perfect and presentable. He has an enormous mansion so he can feel confident to try and get Daisy. The American Dream ruined Gatsby life. He did not obtain what he wanted because the American Dream took over him. Another great character in the novel is Nick Carraway is also a great character through the novel. The author explains to the readers that Nick also started from nothing and with the hard work he achieved what wanted to have a good life, he achieved his american dream. “The Carraways are something of a clan, and we have a tradition that we’re descended from the Dukes of Buccleuch, but the actual founder of my line was my grandfather’s brother, who came here in fifty-one, sent a substitute to the Civil War, and started the wholesale hardware business that my father carries on to-day.” (13) This qoute shows that Nicks family have achieved the American Dream by working hard and going through hard times. His family has reached a wealthy life and gain respect. Throughout the novel the  American Dream impacts the characters and everyone would like to have it, because if you do you have connections with people in the higher class and have own events. By reading this novel, Fitzgerald it shows that the American Dream is different for everyone, but its for a better life.  He describes it as something happy, that benefits everyone, and will have succes if they achieve it. In the end the American Dream play a huge role in the book, but in reality it doesnt matter as much just be who you are and be happy, you dont have to be wealthy and have fancy stuff, just work hard and it will pay off, and we all have freedom, equality and opportunity.
