Chapter I

Introduction

1.1
Background
of Study

A family is a group
of people, which live in one house. Members of family may include father,
mother, and children. Vespa, Lewis et all (2013) stated that family group
includes family households and all family groups that do not include the
householder (subfamilies). Malinowski’s have three definitions about family.
First, family is a bounded set of people (a mother, a father, and children) who
recognize each other and are distinguishable from other groups. Second, family
is a definite physical space, a heart, and a home. Third, a particular set of
emotion, family love. Malinowski’s idea is that family always divided into a
father, mother and the children.  These
subfamilies may consist of either married couples or parent-child units. In many
countries, family determines by blood, for the example is in China. The Chinese
family has traditionally based on the structure of family from the ancestor
until the grandchild. Chinese family determines by the clan which is clan is
revealed the status social or class.

Family is a group of people and has a
relationship. Every relationship always has a conflict. The conflict in family
happens because every person has a different opinion about something.
Communication is sometimes difficult to do with the family. Even though, paying
attention has to do but to communicate the problem with member of family very
difficult. Conflict as a natural phenomenon that happens in social life event
in family. According (Wall 1985), conflict is a process in which two or more
parties attempt to frustrate the attainment of the other’s goals. The factor
underlying conflict are threefold: interdependence, differences in goals, and
differences in perception. Jaycox and Repetiti (1993:351) state, “the family
conflict measure included two items assessing physical aggression, and family
members sometimes get so upset they throw things”.

In novel, Kevin
Kwan entitled Crazy Rich Asians
(2013) show family group. This
novel published June 11 2013 by Doubleday (first publish). This novel has five
characters; there are Rachel Chu, Nicholas Young, Eleanor Young, Edison Cheng,
and Astrid Teo. Those characters have a clan; there are Young, Shang, T’sen,
Cheng, and Chu. The main character is Young’s clan and Rachel Chu. However, the
story does not only focus on these families, but also Cheng’s family tells the
different conflict.

This story tells about Rachel Chu who
has a boyfriend, Nicholas Young. Rachel Chu is a New York University professor
of economics who is from Cupertino, California. Nicholas Young is one of Asia’s
richest men, and his mother is Eleanor Young. Nicholas is professor in New
York. Eleanor is Nick’s mother who wants nothing but the best for Nick.
She wants the best for Nick, especially a wife. She wants girl from upper class
whose social status equal with them. After Eleanor knew Rachel from Chu’s clan,
she tries to find out Rachel’s background.

Rachel Chu agrees
to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young. She
envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality
time with the man she might one day marry. They will attend Colin’s wedding
with Araminta. Rachel never knows that Nick’s family home happens to look like
a palace. She does not know that she will ride in more private planes than cars
and that with one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors on her arm. Rachel might as
well have a target on her back. When they arrive in Singapore, Rachel is
scrutinized by Nick’s relatives and friends from many different angles:
curiosity, envy, gossipy camaraderie, inquisitive probing, passive aggression
(from Nick’s mother, who chooses to be absent), and, just occasionally, genuine
warmth. Eleanor is also very adamant that Nick marry someone from the
close-knit, rich circle of her friends and plans to sabotage Nick and Rachel’s
relationship, Kwan (2013)

Astrid Teo is
Nick’s cousin who is from a very wealthy family, the Leongs. She begins her
story in Paris, France before returning to her home in
Singapore to find that her husband, Michael, is hiding a terrible secret.
Edison Cheng is a wealthy banker and a cousin to Nick from Hong Kong who is
obsessed with leading a perfect life. He wants to impress everyone at the
wedding, but his plans fall short, because of his siblings and family. Nick’s
mother becomes more obsessed with the identity of Nick’s girlfriend. Then his
mother has even hired private investigators to analyze her family and her
background. After Nick’s mother knowing all about Rachel she never agrees that
her son will marry with Rachel. After the Colin’s wedding Nick ask to Rachel to
marry with him. When they in Malaysia Nick design dinner that he will marriage Rachel,
but suddenly his mother comes. Eleanor comes with his grandmother to foil
Nick’s plan. They disagree with Rachel because Rachel from bad family, her
father was not dead, but now he in jail, Kwan (2013)

Therefore, novel Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan 2013 has
very interesting plot. Why the researcher is interested to study this novel due
to three following reason: first, this novel is work of fiction based on the
imagination of the author. He writes good story, which tells a life of class
society. Second, the conflict within the novel is based on upper class of
society in their life. Therefore, after the reading the novel people know how
the conflict in upper class, how they life and how they resolve the problem. The
third reason, this novel contains moral values for the readers where Rachel and
Astrid face the problem. They can resolve their problem very patient and calm.

Based on reason and
illustration above the researcher will analyze family conflict reflected in
novel Crazy Rich Asians using a
sociological approach. Then, the researcher gives title: FAMILY CONFLICT REFLECTED
IN KEVIN KWAN’S CRAZY RICH ASIANS (2013):

Literature
Review

2.1
Previous
Study

After observing the data, the researcher

researcher find the article about the author and some books review a written by
the readers.

The other researchers related to the issue,
there are the first journal of family science entitled “Family Conflict and

researcher analyzes “Family Conflict Reflected in Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians (2013): A Sociological
Approach.”

2.2
Underlying
Theory

2.2.1
The
notion of Sociology literature

Sociology of literature
is one of literary approaches that be applied in study of literary works. Sociology
studies of society and social interaction. Sociology has relationship between
human being in society. Swingewood and Laurenson, (1972: 11) “Sociology is essentially
the scientific, objective study of man in society, the study of social
institution and of social processes; it seeks to answer the question of how
society is possible, how it works, why it persist”. Sociology has relations
studies between society and subject matter, literature is one of them. Sociology
has relationship between literature. Literature, like sociology critically
study about human life.

According Swingewood and
Laurenson, (1972: 13) “literature and sociology are not wholly distinct
discipline but, on the contrary, complement each other, in our understanding of
society”. Wellek and Warren (1962:94), literature is a social institution,
using as its medium language, a social creation. Literature is art from human
expression. It described the social phenomenon from society. Various social
realities such as religion, economy, politic, social, and culture as a social
fact reflect on social life when literary works created. Literature has various
genres such as novel, poetry, drama and prose. It describes social phenomena in
society.

2.2.2
Aspect
of Sociological Theory

There are five
aspect of sociological theory in this novel:

2.2.2.1
Social
Aspect

Swingewood and
Laurenson (1972: 15) states that “for society is more than ensemble of social
institutions that make up social structure: it contains both norms, the
standard of behavior which individual comes to accept as right ways of acting
and judging, as well as values which are consciously formulated and which
people strive to realize socially”. Society is view as a complex system and
interacts to perform various necessary functions. Shared values, norms,
attitudes, and beliefs, religious affiliation, marriage rates, divorce rates,
crime patterns, where you live, and levels of academic achievements.

2.2.2.2
Economic
Aspect

Dauter (2013) state,
“economic sociology is particularly attentive to relationship between economic
activity, the rest of society, and changes in the institutions that
contextualize and condition economic activity”. Economic activity refers to
social institution such as family, government and the economic system shape
other aspect of the social order. (Light, Keller and Calhoun: 1989)  Economic is social institution through which
goods and services produced, distributed, and consumed within society. Talmud (2013:1)
“Sociologist studied economic phenomena in term of social classes, status
groups, institutional analysis, work and occupations, and economic development.

2.2.2.3
Political
Aspect

According Manza (2011),
political sociology is the study of power and relationship between societies,
states, and political conflict. According Lipset, (1963:ix) “the term sociology
was first applied to the systematic study of social relationship, the analysis
of political processes and institutions has been one of its most important
concerns. No sociologist can convey that does not include the political system
as a major part of the analysis”. Social institutions are organized by the
state and government. In sociology, there are political institutions which are
known as political sociology.

2.2.2.4
Cultural
Aspect

According William
(1995:14) “sociology of culture can be seen as the convergence and at a certain
point the transformation, of two clear tendencies; one within general social
thought and the specifically sociology; the other within cultural history and
analysis”. Abumere (2014:1) state “culture can be conceptually distinguished
from society but there are very close connection between these notions”. Giddends
(2005) state, “Culture refers to how the society lives. It includes marriage
custom, language and family life, pattern of work, and religious ceremony”. Culture
share values, norms, symbols, and way of life from one generation to next
generation. We can learn culture from our family.

2.2.3
The Notion
of Family

Family is a
society. Family consists of a husband, wife and children. Family is a kind
group based on the institution of marriage. According Census Bureau, (2007)
defines “the family as a relatively permanent group of two or more people who
are related by blood, marriage or adoption and who live under the same roof”. Therefore,
the family is where everybody learns about love, to be honest, and care. The
characteristic of family is universal. The reason for universality is the
function of family required for the individual and society. The biological,
psychological economic, and social, there are function which performed by the
family. All of these become indispensable for everyone.

2.2.4
The
Notion of Conflict

Conflict is a
natural phenomenon in social life. It is necessary condition for the
development and needed to growth of individuals or society. Coser (1956)
“Conflict is a struggle between opponents over values and claims to scarce
status, power and resources”. According Boulding (1963:5), “conflict is a
situation competition in which the parties are aware of the incompatibility of
potential future positions and in which each party wishes to occupy a position
that is incompatible with the wishes of the others”. It means conflict as a
situation in which two or more persons tries to acquire the same position or
something that they want at the same time. (Jeong 2008:5) state “Conflict
represent and pervasive nature of inter group and international competition
among disparate interest and value that underlies power dynamic”

2.2.5
The
Notion of Family Conflict

Greenhaus and
Beutell (1985:77) state “family conflict is always happens in household but
every family know to problem solving”. Family conflict sometimes happen in
family member when parents have miscommunication with the children or
conversely. The problem solution is important to solve the conflict.
Negotiation and suggestion helps the conflict that happened. These include work
out the issue, separate the problem from the each person, define the problem,
try to talk clearly and reasonably and agree to disagree.
