James McIntyreBody Ritual Among the NaciremaThe basic focus of the Nacirema society is that the body is ugly and needs to go through a series of rituals and ceremonies. These include the medicine men, the use of the shrine for the magical potions, the ritual of the rite-mouth, the seeing of the holy- mouth men every year or twice a year, and the possibility to need to go to the listeners or the latipo if they become sick. I think to a certain extent their beliefs are right because it is important to incorporate the wellbeing of your body into you daily life like the Nacirema do, but there is also more to life than just rituals and ceremonies to try and remove the ugly from the body such as family, friends, and feeling good about yourself outside of the physical body aspects. I think they have some slight focus on the idea of emotional wellbeing with the listeners, but they are still missing some crucial elements like the value of family and being good people towards others and I think those are very important values to incorporate that they failed to. Their focus as a civilization is also changing the things that the people are dissatisfied with but I think it is also important to focus on the things they are satisfied with or have made progress with because that makes society happier and may make it easier to achieve the physical goals they have or allow them to not be as devote to their rituals and accept themselves for who they are rather than obsessing over perfection and trying to reach it. I feel like the Nacirema civilization had some good points but they were too obsessed with the idea of materialistic perfection as opposed to being happy and being a good person. I think those are also important aspects that should be taken very seriously and focused on more so than the physical rituals and ceremonies, like their civilization did. I would not like to live in that society, but I would like to take some of their values and their ideas and incorporate them into my life because they did have some good ideas but they became infatuated with them and I believe there is significantly more to life than the things that they found to be worthy of focus and dedication. It is important to focus on your body, but that is not the only thing that should be focused on so I would like to live in a society that integrates their ideas with family and emotional wellbeing to create a more well rounded society that has a variety of things to focus on and more separation of time than just obsession of the physical aspect of the body.
