My entrepreneurial competencies. Diagnosis and
Possibilities of development.

-Aslan Shikhiyev

Introduction

Entrepreneur –
is a person who is willing to take risky action for the sake of profit.

From an instant view of the word profit in this type of sentence mostly people think about material asset, and being an entrepreneur is some kind of profession for some people. But according to Eduard Omarov, entrepreneur, author of the book “Artisans and Rockefellers” (??????? ? ?????????? in Russian),  CEO of the «Quanta+» and deputy of the Tyumen Regional Duma, Russia, being an entrepreneur is the type of character, and success is not wealth (or in this case profit), it is feeling of inner freedom. This statement confirms that entrepreneurial competencies are the skills, which we obtain throughout our life, such as negotiation skills, ability to be creative or being competitve even in insignificant things, all of these characteristics are indicators of entrepreneurial competencies we have. -Diagnosis This part of the essay will be focused on general assessment of entrepreneurial competencies according to GET2 (General Measure of Enterprising Tendency).1The original test was developed by Sally Caird and Cliff Johnson in 1987-88 at Durham University Business School and has subsequently been developed into an online test by Sally Caird. It’s a 54-question questionnaire that measures your personal character trains in the five dimensions of entrepreneurial competencies. The test has been designed to bring together and measure a number of personal ‘tendencies’ commonly associated with the enterprising person. These include: ·       Need for Achievement·       Need for Autonomy·       Creative Tendency·       Risk Taking ·       Drive and Determination  Need for Achievement According to the evaluation based on my answers the results shows that I have very high need for achievements which means that I can have qualities such as:·         An orientation towards the future·         Reliance on your own ability·         An optimistic rather than a pessimistic outlook·         A strong task orientation·         Effective time management·         An orientation towards results, which applies to yourself and others·         A restlessness, strong drive and high energy levels·         Opinionated and ready to defend your ideas and views·         A determination to ensure your objectives are met even when difficulties arise·         Responsibility and persistence in pursuit of your aims·         Goal–orientated, setting challenging but realistic goals·         A willingness to work long and hard when necessary to complete tasks Need for achievement is one of the backbones entrepreneurial character as they have huge desire to achieve their goals in order to get what they want. But as it was mentioned in the results of the test people with a high need for achievement, may need to be careful about maintaining their work life balance as they could have health issues because of overworking or relation issues, but it may be considered hardest thing to achieve as majority of entrepreneurs are workaholics. Need for Autonomy My result at this part of the test is medium which means that I recognize myself as an independent person who is also happy to work in a team, which is basically true as business has never been an individual activity, and results states that even if I can be the leader I will be also happy to be a part of the team. Creative Tendency Result of this dimension of my entrepreneurial competency is medium as well and as it is written in the assessment “you may recognize yourself as being somewhat creative, although you are less likely to have radical, disruptive innovative ideas with game-changing impacts. However, you may be very good at finding and applying new technologies in a skillful way to your work, and may be practically productive in the way you develop and apply your skills. If you wished to develop a more innovative approach then you might like to consider developing your own latent creative skills.” This means that I can be innovative but not in the circumstances in which I don’t have enough time to decide, I am rather more creative when I am under no pressure and can give freedom to my mind. Calculated Risk-taking This is perhaps the most important thing which differs an entrepreneurial way of thinking from the other ones, as people who are competent in risk taking can easily be an entrepreneur after developing other skills. Happily I have medium score from this part which means that I calculate more than I take actions, which on one hand bad as I can miss opportunities at the time but on the other hand avoids me to make wrong decisions. Locus of Control This part of the online test’s evaluation describes my internal locus of control as highly controlled which means that I have these following skills·         Opportunistism, seeking and taking advantage of opportunities;·         Self-confidence with the belief that I have control over my destiny and I make my own luck, rather than being controlled by fate;·         Proactivity, taking personal responsibility to navigate problems that arise to achieve success on my terms;·         Determination, expressing a strong will and seeking to exert control over my life;·         Self-belief, where I equate the results achieved with the effort I make. 2The Locus of Control is defined as the degree to which people believe that they have control over the outcome of events in their lives, when the people who has low degree of Locus of Control believe that the failure that they achieve in their life is linked to the external forces but paradoxically not the success. -Development According to Dr. Jyotsna Sethi and Dr. Anand Saxena, the vital thing in development of the entrepreneurial competencies is awareness. If you are already aware of how competent you are as an entrepreneur, what skill you have, and what skills you lack in your arsenal you are already on the first step of the development process. This is may also considered to be the hardest part as well, because it is very hard to see something what you miss when dealing in different circumstances, and of surely if you want to change something the hardest part is to begin to the change, and escape your comfort zone. To ease this process I found the best solution in the observations of Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad book, where he says that in order to improve yourself you should put yourself in a condition, circumstance in which you have to do something you haven’t done yet under the pressure, in this environment your abilities improve because you simply don’t want to lose money or anything valuable to you. As an example he mentioned that he always spend his profit on development of business or investments, so when it will be the time when he should pay taxes he under pressure of additional spendings he would seek for the new cash inflows from which he can pay the taxes. This strategy helped me a lot to get such result from the above mentioned test, and could be implemented by anyone as they are general strategies not individual.  Conclusion To conclude, it is no matter do if a person does not have some competencies there is always opportunities to acknowledge and improve them by practicing using variety of strategies. These topic of diagnosis and development is applicable not only in entrepreneurial context but in every challenge we face every day, from my point of view it is simply planning and action, you check what you have and what you should get and improve yourself, be a better version of you every new day, this is formula of being competent and successful entrepreneur.  Bibliography –         Artisans and Rockefellers by Eduard Omarov-         Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki-         ENTREPRENEURIAL-         Competencies, Motivation, Performance and Rewards by Dr. Jyotsna Sethi, Dr Anand Saxena-         www.get2test.net-         https://t-i.ru/article/new/8671
